Although I studied IT and graduated as an embedded systems programming engineer, I wasn’t passionate about this field, so I explored Online Marketing. Right after graduating from university, I started taking various external courses. At that time, website design was very popular, and I enrolled in a course on designing website interfaces. Curious about SEO, I also took a comprehensive SEO course at a website training center in Saigon—this was a turning point that changed my life. After completing the course, I applied to many places for SEO internship and website data entry positions. Lacking experience, only one tourism company called me for an interview. Ultimately, I was hired with a salary of 3.5 million VND and began my SEO journey from there.
The Story of Wandering SEO
Hello everyone, I want to share my 10-year journey with the SEO profession as well as the ups and downs in life with this career. A journey from my early days as a student to leaving the city to return to the countryside to do “wandering SEO.”
Starting the Journey
2009 – I packed my backpack and left Tien Giang for Saigon after receiving the admission letter from Hutech. Alone, I searched for a place to stay and rented a tiny 15m² room, just enough for one person. In the summer, the room felt like an oven. A series of days eating cheap street food began.
While studying, my mother gave me 1.2 million VND per month for living expenses (food and rent). It was never enough, so I took a job as a server at a billiards cafe in the evenings, earning 900k/month. Mornings were for studying, evenings for working. After much struggle, I finally graduated in 2012.
Like most newbies entering the SEO field, I was eager to learn as much as possible about SEO, improve my knowledge, and thereby increase my income. I became passionate about attending both large and small SEO workshops, listening to SEO gurus talk impressively. Eventually, I realized that while I hadn’t earned much money yet, I had already “acquired a few horses,” and the knowledge from those courses passed by quickly, like riding a horse to glance at flowers. In the end, I decided to self-study foreign SEO resources and put into practice what I had learned.
For the next seven years, I worked full-time as an SEO specialist for various companies, hopping between jobs and engaging with different industries. I faced numerous failures and was pushed to the limit by bosses, but the experience I gained became an invaluable asset from those setbacks.
LIFE ALWAYS KNOWS HOW TO CREATE A RANGE OF EMOTIONS
2016 – I got married, and my wife and I rented a small apartment far from downtown Saigon to save on expenses. The place was just right for a young couple. Mornings were for work, evenings for cooking together, taking care of each other, and every few weeks, we’d head back to my parents’ place in Tien Giang.

LEAVING THE CITY TO RETURN TO THE COUNTRYSIDE AND STARTING A WANDERING SEO CAREER
2019 – My wife and I decided to move to Gia Lai to start anew due to a family crisis. Ignoring all the dissuasion from my parents back home, we left Saigon behind, along with budding career opportunities.
I believed that with hard work, everything would turn out fine. When we returned to the countryside, I looked for jobs related to online marketing, but no company would hire me, simply because the industry wasn’t developed in small provinces at that time. During this period, I felt confused and anxious, as prolonged unemployment would make it hard to continue living there.
EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON
With savings running low and my wife pregnant, I decided to try my luck finding freelance SEO work through SEO Facebook groups (back then, there weren’t as many SEO communities as today; I only remember the SEO MXH group being the most active). I posted in various groups, and luck smiled on me when I simultaneously found three small companies in Saigon needing freelance SEO services.
To this day, I’m still quietly grateful to the owner of an aluminum and glass shop who gave me the opportunity to step into the world of freelance SEO in 2017 (at that time, I was working a day job and taking on extra freelance projects at night). I’m thankful for deciding to learn SEO, even though in 2012, it was still a novel concept, almost like a trend. I’m grateful for choosing to abandon what I wasn’t passionate about or didn’t love. And I’m thankful for the failures that allowed me to learn so much more.
LEARN TO MASTER YOURSELF BEFORE MASTERING OTHERS
My work principles: Punctuality, meeting KPIs, dedicated customer support, clear consultation, reasonable costs, and assistance for startups and small businesses. I use time effectively to create a work rhythm that suits the parties I support.
Currently, thanks to the experience accumulated over 10 years and the results achieved, I’ve gained the trust of many clients who approach me and entrust me with large projects. This has given me opportunities to explore various industries.
Since starting SEO, I’ve realized the importance of this profession. With the desire to shorten the learning curve for SEO newbies, I created the SEO Dạo YouTube channel to share the SEO knowledge I’ve gathered over the past 10 years. Though I haven’t achieved monumental success yet, I now have a dedicated offline and online support team.
Looking back, SEO has given me a life of INDEPENDENCE in every aspect. So, face every challenge with a curious mindset, as if embarking on a new journey, rather than with panic or fear.
